I thought I'd share it with you - it was a really neat experience! I'll post the other song, which was aired on NBC when it comes around.

This week on Vientos del Pueblo: Victor Jara

This week, Vientos del Pueblo (Sunday 2-5pm) will feature Victor Jara, a Chilean singer-songwriter, poet, political activist, and theater director. On Vientos del Pueblo, you'll hear a lot of music from the nueva canción genre. Victor Jara's music is an essential part of this genre. After the 1973 coup in Chile, Victor Jara was detained, tortured and killed. A concert in his honor was organized by Phil Ochs (the late brother of WRPI DJ Sonny Ochs) and held in Madison Square Garden in May 1974. Victor Jara's wife and children carry on his legacy through the Fundación Victor Jara (Victor Jara Foundation). To learn more about him and hear his music, tune in to Vientos del Pueblo on Sunday, September 20.

Coming up on Folk and World Features

On the next two editions of Folk and World Features, I will be featuring my favorite vocalists in the folk genre. On Sunday, September 20, I will feature my favorite female vocalists (including recently departed Mary Travers, Ronnie Gilbert of the Weavers, and several more recent people you may not be familiar with), and on Sunday, September 27, I will feature my favorite male vocalists.

Summer of Woodstock draws to a close

To all of my listeners,
I would like to thank you for listening to the program, which I spent 13 Sunday evenings with you on WRPI. For 30 of the 32 Woodstock artists, we only had those 13 two hour shows to fit it all in. Had I been able to spend more time on it, I would have done at least 32 two hour programs, one for each artist. I am proud to be the only person on the only radio station in probably at least New York state to spend the entire summer celebrating the 40th anniversary of Woodstock and promoting the 40th anniversary concert at Bethel Woods. Maybe WRPI (with yours truly on the mic) is the only broadcast media to spend that much time on the 40th anniversary. And to do so 40 years after being the only radio station in upstate NY to promote Woodstock '69 is an honor.

I hope to return next summer with a program similar to Summer of Woodstock; what it is I do not know yet. (Maybe in 2014 we'll do a 45th anniversary program! ....or a late night 15th anniversary of Woodstock '99)...but that's assuming I'm still around wrpi.

If you would like to receive a copy of my interviews with Sam Andrew (BBHC), Tom Constanten (Grateful Dead), Country Joe, Conrad Oberg, Woodstock producers Artie Kornfeld and Michael Lang, Woodstock Alumni Gerry, Mike Caprio, Harry Carter, and Luther Callman, please email me at steve.malinski@gmail.com or check back in about a week on wrpi.org for details. R.I.P. Woodstock and WRPI "Kaleidoscope" alumnus Marty Dion, who we were going to talk to on the program but left us early August.

Peace,
Steve Malinski

Fall schedule starts August 31

WRPI's fall schedule goes into effect on Monday, August 31! As you say farewell to Summer of Woodstock, check out these new shows:

Breakfast in Bed
Wednesday, 7-9am

On this show, you'll hear folk, Latin American, Native American, and other music (mostly traditional/acoustic) from around the world. Each week will have a particular focus. Sometimes the focus may be on particular musicians. Other times, the show may focus on topics such as music of indigenous peoples in North America and Latin America, female vocalists in contemporary American folk, traditional music of Eastern Europe, or labor union songs.

Upcoming on the Summer of Woodstock

Hey Folks,
I just wanted to let you all know about some exciting things in the next few weeks. We'll be having interviews with Sam Andrew from Big Brother and the Holding Company, Tom Constanten of the Grateful Dead, Country Joe MacDonald, and Woodstock producers Artie Kornfeld and Michael Lange. We'll also be hearing from a few folks that were at Woodstock 40 years ago.

On a sad note, Marty Dion, a friend and neighbor of mine who was on the air with Jim Barrett on "Kaleidoscope" passed away this past weekend. He was going to come down to WRPI to either guest host one of the shows or just share his Woodstock experience as he was there as press with WRPI for the week before the festival and the festival itself. I will be airing the 45-minute interview with him and Jim that I did for WRPI's 50th anniversary in 2007 on one of the upcoming shows.

IF YOU WERE AT WOODSTOCK, please contact me at steve.malinski@gmail.com or leave a message for me at WRPI 276-6248. I want to hear from you about your experiences at Woodstock!

-Steve
