This week on Vientos del Pueblo: Victor Jara

This week, Vientos del Pueblo (Sunday 2-5pm) will feature Victor Jara, a Chilean singer-songwriter, poet, political activist, and theater director. On Vientos del Pueblo, you'll hear a lot of music from the nueva canciĆ³n genre. Victor Jara's music is an essential part of this genre. After the 1973 coup in Chile, Victor Jara was detained, tortured and killed. A concert in his honor was organized by Phil Ochs (the late brother of WRPI DJ Sonny Ochs) and held in Madison Square Garden in May 1974. Victor Jara's wife and children carry on his legacy through the FundaciĆ³n Victor Jara (Victor Jara Foundation). To learn more about him and hear his music, tune in to Vientos del Pueblo on Sunday, September 20.

Coming up on Folk and World Features

On the next two editions of Folk and World Features, I will be featuring my favorite vocalists in the folk genre. On Sunday, September 20, I will feature my favorite female vocalists (including recently departed Mary Travers, Ronnie Gilbert of the Weavers, and several more recent people you may not be familiar with), and on Sunday, September 27, I will feature my favorite male vocalists.
